Report: July 1998 by Marko Laine
The most of the Foreign traffic here comes and goes between 1100 - 1900 local time (UTC+3). Helsinki-Vantaa Airport do not have spectators terace. So if you want to take photographs, I suggest that you stay in transit area as long as you can.
Otherwise 04-22 movements can be seen
1. In the end of international terminal wing where the car ramp is going underground. From this position you can see all movements on the rwy and three nearest stands. Unfortunately view is quite often blocked by a/c on stand 33. Lenses from 28 to 300 mm needed.
2. In FlyIn restaurant and very small spectators area in front of the FlyIn's entrance (International terminal, third floor). Especially photographing from the spectators area is very difficult because it is always crowded and you have to take pictures throug plastic "plex" and a glass window. (Between the plex and the window there is about 30 cm empty space). From the restaurant the view is good but also limited by a/cs in stands. There are monitors with international arrivals and departures in both places. Lenses: 25 - 45 mm to a/cs taxing to/from the stands, atleast 300 mm to taxiways and >400 mm to runways.
15-33 movements:
The ramp of the public road in the end of the domestic terminal wing (terminal is shaped like boomerang). From there you can see and photograph all the movements on the rwy. In front of the ramp are stands 8 - 11, which are used by FIN SF340s, KFB J31s and probably SF340s in the future. Lenses from 50 to 300 mm needed.
Cargo and Business flight aprons are located after the domestic terminal in the end of the rwy 15. The easiest way to photograph cargo aircrafts is to take them from the ramp when they are taxing to stands.
The finals are also accessible. The finals are also accessible. The final of rwy 33 can be reached by foot but the final of rwys 15, 22 and 04 can only be reached by a car.
