SYDNEY: Star Alliance said it's in talks with Air India, Jet Airways and Sahara Airlines to get one of them to join the world's largest group of airlines, extending its network to the second-most populous nation.

``The Indian government has been opening the international market so these domestic carriers are not having access to the international network,'' the group's chief executive Jaan Albrecht said in Sydney on Monday. ``This is an area we are watching very closely.''

Joining Star Alliance would give a carrier access to more than 15,000 connecting flights a day run by other carriers flying to 840 destinations in 150 countries. Airline alliances help increase sales and reduce costs by feeding passengers onto other networks, sharing common facilities and making joint purchases.

``The evolution in India is quite dramatic,'' Albrecht said. An agreement may be reached ``rather quickly,'' he said.

Frankfurt-based Star Alliance has also been looking to add a member from China and Russia, Albrecht said.

He said ``China, Russia, India are our main target countries.'' The group has been in talks with Beijing-based Air China, the country's largest international carrier.

Albrecht also said the group will make a recommendation in a few months on a strategy for acquiring a Russia-based partner.

Thai president suspended on prime minister's order
Friday August 12, 2005
In a clear indication that the era of government meddling in Thai Airways International is not over, the airline's president, Kanok Abhiradee, was removed at least temporarily after being criticized by the country's prime minister for failing to react swiftly enough to a series of external crises enveloping the carrier.Kanok had been credited with launching a major revamp of Thai's product over the past 18 months that has received high marks from analysts. But on Wednesday night he was "suspended" from his position owing to "inefficient management," according to PM Thaksin Shinawatra, who spoke to Thai media and launched a scathing attack, telling media sources, "frankly, Kanok is inefficient."

On Thursday, Thai Airways issued a pair of press statements. The first said that Kanok "remains in his position as Thai's president but without management authorities." A subsequent "revised" statement asserted that he "remains in his position as Thai's president overseeing general activities." Both releases stated that Thai's board had "granted management authorities" to board member Somchainuk Engtrakul "during the current fuel crisis in order to operate effectively during this situation."

Thai also announced a management shakeup, with Executive VP-Finance and Accounting Kaweepan Raungpaka named EVP Human Resources Development & Management Dept. Executive VP-System Audit Dept. Ngamnit Sombutpibool was appointed EVP for finance and accounting.

Thai has yet to announce its June quarter financial results, but Peter Negline from JP Morgan in Hong Kong cautioned in late June that the airline was facing problems because of soaring fuel prices, terrorism in southern Thailand, a slow tourism recovery from last year's tsunami and stiff competition from low-cost carriers. Added to those burdens has been the falling baht, which is estimated to have cost Thai an extra $65 million.

Analysts had been expecting an overall loss of $80 million during the June quarter low season but believe the figure will be double that. Under Kanok, Thai has undergone a significant turnaround with upgrades to its inflight product and new aircraft.
