Freddie Laker takes off on last flight

THE aviation industry lost one of its pioneers last week with the death of 83-year-old Freddie Laker in Miami.
Known for his role in revolutionising air travel, Sir Freddie was knighted in 1978 for his contribution to aviation and Britain's economy.
He came up with the idea of a no-reservation, low-cost service and forged the way for the no-frills airlines used by millions today.
Sir Freddie saw himself as an icon of free enterprise and his beloved airline was always at the very heart of his existence. "I work on it every day of my life and I'll never retire," he once said.
