Northwest nearly doubles 1Q net loss to $458m
Mary Kirby, Philadelphia (21Apr05, 15:00 GMT, 160 words)
Northwest Airlines nearly doubled its net loss to $458 million for the first quarter 2005, as soaring fuel prices and labor costs continued to cut into the US major’s bottom line.
The carrier, which recorded a $230 million net loss during the same year-ago quarter, says revenue for the three month period ended March 31 climbed 7.5% to $2.8 billion. This year-on-year gain failed to offset a 14% rise in expenses, which grew to over $3 billion during the first quarter.
Unit costs excluding fuel increased by 1.3%, while fuel costs rose 37.7% versus last year.
Northwest posted a quarterly operating loss of $292 million, nearly trebling its $108 million operating loss for the same time in 2004.
“Our results were disappointing. Record high fuel prices and increasingly noncompetitive labor costs on the expense side and excess capacity and competitors’ pricing decisions on the revenue side negatively affected our performance during the quarter,” says Northwest president and CEO Doug Steenland.
