September 21, 2005 Dublin airport authorities unveiled the site for the city's second terminal on Tuesday which they said would cost EUR170 million-EUR200 million (USD$206.5 million-USD$242.9 million) to build and should be operating by 2009.
The Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) said the 50,000 square metre building would be built to the south of the current terminal, which has struggled to cope with a surge in passenger traffic since Ireland's economic boom in the 1990s.
The new terminal is at the heart of the authority's EUR1.2 billion (USD$1.46 billion), 10 year plan to raise Dublin Airport's capacity from 18 million passengers a year at present to over 30 million passengers a year.
"The new terminal, which will become operational in late 2009, will have a capacity for up to 15 million passengers per year," the DAA said in a statement.
The Irish government announced in May that the airport operator would commission the long-awaited Terminal Two and that an operator would be selected via open tendering.
The DAA said it would soon start the tendering process for the detailed design of the terminal and then conduct a tender competition for the construction.
